The Pub

The Red Cow, Chrishall, Essex - Fine dining in a friendly local pub

Escaping the Herd?

Far from the hubbub of the main roads, nestled amidst thatched cottages in the quintessential English village of Chrishall, just South of Cambridge between Saffron Walden and Royston, sits The Red Cow - a picture-perfect thatched pub, ideal for your escape to the country.

Whether you prefer a pint and a good chat, a simple bar meal or more formal a la carte cuisine, Proprietor and award–winning chef Toby Didier’Serre, fiancée Alexis Beeching and their daughter Lottie guarantee a friendly welcome in beautiful surroundings and delicious, homemade dishes made from daily fresh, carefully sourced ingredients on seasonally changing menus.

Typical snapshots of  The Red Cow day will reveal ramblers, foodies, locals, families (and dogs!), shooting parties, romantics, celebrants – all feeling at home and appropriately catered for, whether outside in the pretty cottage garden, or cozying up in front of warming open fires. Why not join them? These folk did!...

Beautifully presented (on the plate and by the staff), wholesome tasty dishes with ingredients so fresh and local, you could almost see the farmer’s footprints leading from the field to The Red Cow’s kitchen – an ‘udderly’ satisfying social and culinary experience

We popped in whilst passing expecting reasonable grub but we found a gem. Will we go back? Oh yes. In fact we have booked a table for next weekend to try the a la carte menu. Brilliant”
This is a fine traditional pub in its own right, but factor in the food and you have, possibly, all you could ask for in a rural venue. I would dine there every week, if I lived near enough

A very welcoming lovely old pub with top-notch food and great service to match. The portions were very generous and good value for money and everything we ate was delicious. You can tell from the other diners we spoke to that people come back time and time again

Going to any restaurant with children can be stressful but the children loved the food and cleared their plates!
