Red Cow reviewed on Local Secrets
The Red Cow in Chrishall has been reviewed on the popular Local Secrets website. Read the full review below:
Don’t arrive late at the Red Cow in Chrishall for Sunday lunch or you’ll discover what popularity really means! Why had so many people made the decision to visit the Red Cow? Among other reasons, charming hospitality makes one feel instantly at home in the lovely old building, which is full of beams and divided into a loosely table-and-chaired casual drinking and eating area and a more traditional restaurant. The pub is deceptively large and seemingly contented diners kept appearing from nowhere as we enjoyed our midday repast.
Affable landlords the Cozens warmly welcomed us to their pub amidst the lunchtime rush and then proceeded to let us know what our options were at this late hour. Service doesn’t come much better than this.
A thatched inn in Chrisall in North Essex, about half way between Royston and Saffron Walden, The Red Cow is every inch the scenic village pub. On a rainy December day when we visited, its low ceilings and open fire proved enticing whilst from previous visits in the summer (under previous ownership) pints in the sunshine by such a gorgeous old building made for salad days. If anything this can only get better as the car park has now been extended and the front of the pub is now full of picnic tables. Bring on June!
Two pints of the deeply quaffable beer were procured before the meal proper arrived. Commencing with potato and leek soup and game pate, the starters gave a fair indication of what was to follow: good food with the occasional quirk. Whilst the soup proved delicious, absolutely ideal for the weather plus it was seasoned exactly right, the pate came in a gargantuan slab rounded with pancetta served up with a paucity of bread. Ideal for pate fanatics or ravenous carnivores out for offal, less so for the rest of us.
Mains consisted of a posh spin on the traditional roast chicken - poisson with succulent roast potatoes and the best vegetables we’d had in a while. Delicately crunchy brussel sprouts, baby carrots and red cabbage with chunks of apricot came with the meal. Delicious! Our other main was a little more adventurous and unfortunately it didn’t quite pay off. A mushroom and truffle risotto with lush flakes of parmesan proved a departure too far off the beaten track from the Sunday lunch standards, proving as soggy as the weather. But it’s to be commended that a place like this was offering it. Dessert followed- lemon posset, doused in rasberry sauce and served with ginger biscuits. No complaints here save the murmuring of sated stomachs.
The Red Cow is a cut above the average village local, perfectly balancing upon that tightrope between going all out for the dining crowd and attracting the locals. Add it to your list of places of to visit.
